August 2007: Acting Mayor of Nablus unable to come to Dundee
The Lord Provost of Dundee invited the Mayor of Nablus to attend the twinning celebrations in Dundee from 23-26 August 2007. However, Mayor Adli Yaish was detained by the Israeli military forces on 24th May.Therefore the Acting Mayor - Dr Hafez Shaheen - was invited to take his place. Unfortunately, this was also not possible because the Israeli military forces did not allow Dr Saheen to leave the City of Nablus.
Fortunately, Mr Abdel Aker (International Relations Officer for the Nablus Municipality) left the day before Dr Shaheen and managed to get through the checkpoints. He represented Nablus in place of the Acting Mayor.
